One of my present research interests is to study molecular clusters with 1 up to 20 helium atoms or hydrogen molecules.
For example, gas-phase HeN-CO2 clusters (N up to 20) are generated in a supersonic expansion of molecular beam with trace amount of CO2 seeded in helium buffer gas of high pressure (up to 35atm) and low temperature (down to 170K). Vibrational-rotational spectra of HeN-CO2 clusters are observed with infrared diode laser spectrometer. The vibrational and rotational analyses showed the structural characters with the size change and the evolution from molecular clusters to quantum superfluid liquid. We hope that study of infrared spectroscopy of hydrogen clusters can, in the same way, reveal the evolution of hydrogen clusters into quantum liquid, and can result finally in the finding of superfluidity of para-hydrogen in bulk liquid.
