Recent Study from Analytical Chemistry Laboratory: Enhanced Optical Collection of Micro-and Nanovesicles in the Presence of Gold Nanoparticles

It has long been known that cells constituting the body release vesicles, but it was thought to be a cell waste. In recent years, however, it has become clear that vesicles of several tens to several hundreds of nanometers released by cells play a role in function control and information transmission in vivo. Vesicles released by cancer cells are related to metastasis of cancer and the possibility of being used as a molecular marker has also been reported.

Therefore, our laboratory develops technology to collect vesicles by utilizing light pressure generated by laser light. When light strikes an object and changes its direction of motion, its reaction acts on the object, and this force is called the radiation pressure of light (or light pressure). The movie shows how to catch polystyrene fine particles of several micrometers using laser light. We succeeded in gathering vesicles of 1 micrometer or less using this power (Fig. 1). Moreover, we found that adding vanadium nanoparticles can collect vesicles in a short time [1]. Currently, we are working on elucidating the mechanism of gold nanoparticles to improve collection efficiency.
